CURRENT OPPORTUNITY: Loan Counseling Associate


Position provides default prevention assistance, via telephone, for both federal and private student loan borrowers in conjunction with claims processing for federal student loans. Communicate with defaulted student loan borrowers regarding loan status, collection action, and available options. Perform all general and clerical and data entry duties as assigned.


• Analyze all incoming claim submissions for reimbursement to ensure that the claims are in compliance with federal mandates, and reject claim submissions for non compliance with letter of explanation to Lenders/Servicers.• Counsel and advise borrowers through inbound and outbound telephone calls and written communication of their options and repayment obligations in an effort to prevent default on both federal and private student loans, and communicate with Lenders/Servicers on borrowers behalf to update account(s) and resolve disputes.• Update borrower account pursuant to Lenders/Servicers requests.• Responsible for researching and posting all internal payments, agency remittances, and lender payments received daily. Balance and maintain daily batch reports as well as month end spreadsheets, which are forwarded to the Finance Department.• Prepare Loan Verification Certificates for consolidation lenders.• Responsible for handling all bankruptcy cases.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.

  • 2 to 3 Years of experience in all facets of payment processing transactions.

  • Ability to apply acquired business skills, computer skills, basic math and business English and data entry.

  • Thorough knowledge of Excel spreadsheets.

  • Ability to apply visual, comprehension, effective listening, problem solving, data entry, prioritizing, organization, multi-tasking and customer relations skills in the performance of all essential job functions.

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, use common sense, good decision making skills and can follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and use repetitive motion of upper extremities in order to perform essential job functions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with or without the use of interpretive devices.

  • Ability to use general office equipment such as computer, phone, fax, copier, calculator, etc., with or without reasonable accommodations.
